There are 58 official airports and over 300 additional airstrips spread across the mainland, islands and conservation areas — one of the most extensive networks in sub‑Saharan Africa.Aviation is the backbone of our tourism industry, which contributes approximately 17% of our GDP and supports over 700,000 jobs nationwide. In the 2023/24 financial year alone, our airports handled more than 7.1 million passengers, a rise of over 10% year‑on‑year. Around 65% of all international visitors arrive by air, confirming just how critical reliable flight connections are to our economy.Key Airports & GatewaysInternational Airports- Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR) – Dar es Salaam: The country’s busiest hub, handling around 34% of all air arrivals, with connections across Africa, the Middle East, Asia and Europe.
- Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO): Sits between Arusha and Moshi, the ideal gateway for Mount Kilimanjaro treks and the northern safari circuit — Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire and Lake Manyara. Handles roughly 23% of arrivals.
- Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ) – Zanzibar: The gateway to the islands, receiving the largest share of international traffic at about 43%.
- Msalato International Airport – Dodoma: Currently nearing completion to serve the nation’s capital and administrative centre.Regional & Local Airports
Major domestic facilities include Arusha, Mwanza, Bukoba, Mbeya, Tabora, Kigoma, Mtwara and Songwe. There are also hundreds of smaller airstrips within national parks and private concessions, making remote safari and research destinations easily reachable by light aircraft.Airlines Operating HereNational Carrier- Air Tanzania: Operates a modern fleet serving 16 domestic routes plus destinations across Africa, Dubai, Mumbai and Guangzhou .Scheduled Domestic & Regional Airlines- Precision Air, Coastal Aviation, Auric Air, ZanAir, Fly540 and others connect cities, islands and park airstrips.Major International Airlines- Ethiopian Airlines, Kenya Airways, Qatar Airways, Emirates, KLM, Turkish Airlines, Lufthansa and many more connect Tanzania with the rest of the world.Planning Your JourneyEntry Requirements- Most visitors require a visa, available online via the e‑visa system or upon arrival at designated ports of entry.
- All travellers must have valid travel documents and meet health and customs regulations in force at the time of travel. Always check official guidance well before departure.Choosing Your Arrival Point- Heading straight for safaris or Kilimanjaro? Fly into Kilimanjaro (JRO) to save extra connecting flights or long drives.
- Visiting Zanzibar first or focusing on southern/western Tanzania? Dar es Salaam (DAR) or Zanzibar (ZNZ) are usually best.Getting Around Internally- Scheduled flights link the main hubs daily.
- Light aircraft charters are widely available for safaris, groups or bespoke itineraries — very practical given the distances involved.
